Metal tortoise in the north or a crystal one in the north-east. Stabilises finances and slows impulsive decisions in the household.
Eight directions, ten rooms
Vastu Shastra
What each direction governs, what belongs there, what does not, and what to do when the plan cannot be changed.
South carries weight and stability. It should be heavier and higher than the north.
Best used for
Master bedroom, heavy storage, tall furniture
Keep away from here
Main entrance (for most plots), underground water, open space
Remedy: Place cupboards and heavy furniture along the south wall. Avoid mirrors on this wall.
-
Main Entrance Best: N, NE, E Avoid: SW, S
The entrance sets the energy of everything inside. It should open inward and clockwise, be well lit, and never face a staircase, toilet or a neighbour's sharp corner.
-
Puja Room Best: NE, E, N Avoid: S, SW, SE
Face east or north while praying. The idols should not face each other or the door, and nothing should be stored above or below the altar.
-
Kitchen Best: SE, NW Avoid: NE, SW, N
Cook facing east. Keep the stove and the sink apart — fire and water in contact is the most common kitchen defect and is linked to household friction.
-
Master Bedroom Best: SW, S, W Avoid: NE, SE
Sleep with the head to the south or east. Do not place a mirror facing the bed, and avoid a beam running directly overhead.
-
Children's Room Best: W, NW, E Avoid: SW
Study desk facing east or north. Keep the room light; the south-west belongs to the parents.
-
Bathroom & Toilet Best: NW, W, S Avoid: NE, SE, centre
Never in the north-east or the centre. Keep the door closed, drainage flowing north or east, and a salt bowl to absorb negativity.
-
Study Best: NE, E, N, W Avoid: SW
Face east or north while studying. Keep the desk away from a wall corner pointing at you.
-
Cash Locker Best: SW, S Avoid: NE, SE
Place in the south-west, opening towards the north — Kubera's direction. Never keep it empty.
-
Staircase Best: S, SW, W Avoid: NE, centre
Should turn clockwise and never occupy the north-east or the centre of the house.
-
Water Tank (underground) Best: NE, N, E Avoid: SW, SE
Underground water belongs in the north-east; overhead tanks in the south-west or west.
Corrects a missing or cut corner in the plot without construction. Fix at the defective corner at ceiling height.
Five or six metal rods in the north-west or west to keep stagnant air moving. Never hang above a seating position.
Rock salt in an open glass bowl in the south-west and in each bathroom. Replace weekly. The standard low-cost negativity absorber.
In the north or south-east, in a green or blue pot, never in the north-east. Keep the vines climbing upward, never trailing down.
Mirrors on the north or east wall only. Doubling the north wall is said to double income; a mirror facing the bed or the main door is a defect.
In the north-east, filled with clean water and changed daily. The classic corrective for a compromised north-east.
Burn camphor at dusk in the south-west to clear heaviness. Simple, traditional, and effective for rooms that feel stale.
