Numerology in the Indian tradition works with three numbers. Mulank comes from the day of the month, Bhagyank from the entire date, and Namank from the letters of the name. Each answers a different question, and the relationship between them is more informative than any one alone.

Mulank — the driver

Add the digits of the day you were born until one digit remains. Someone born on the 17th has a mulank of 8. This number describes instinct — how a person behaves when nobody is directing them. It is the most personal of the three and the one people recognise themselves in.

Bhagyank — the conductor

Add every digit of the full date. This describes the road rather than the driver: the conditions life keeps arranging, the situations that recur. Where mulank is what you want, bhagyank is what keeps being offered.

When the two disagree

If the two numbers are friendly, instinct and circumstance pull in the same direction. Decisions come easily, and the risk is drift, because nothing forces a choice. If they are not friendly, what a person wants and what life keeps handing them are different things. That friction is uncomfortable and it is also the making of the chart — people with the mismatch usually end up more capable than those without it.

The nine numbers and their planets

  • 1 — Sun. Leadership, originality, difficulty taking orders.
  • 2 — Moon. Sensitivity, cooperation, indecision.
  • 3 — Jupiter. Knowledge, expansion, scattering.
  • 4 — Rahu. Unconventional, hard-working, restless.
  • 5 — Mercury. Quick, commercial, impatient.
  • 6 — Venus. Warm, artistic, over-giving.
  • 7 — Ketu. Analytical, private, withdrawn.
  • 8 — Saturn. Disciplined, late-rewarded, rigid.
  • 9 — Mars. Courageous, energetic, angry.

The Lo Shu grid

Placing every digit of the date into a fixed 3×3 grid shows which faculties repeat and which are missing. A repeated number amplifies that capacity; a missing one marks something that has to be built deliberately. Three numbers completing a line form an arrow, and a completed line is a lifelong strength.

A missing number in the Lo Shu grid is not a defect. It marks a capacity life did not hand you free.
