Mangal dosha is one of the most quoted and least understood readings in Indian astrology. It is counted when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a chart. Those six houses share a theme: they touch the body, the family, the home, the marriage, longevity and the bed. Mars is heat and friction, and the reading is that heat lands in a close relationship.

It is checked three times, not once

A chart is examined from three reference points, and each answers a different question. From the lagna, the dosha describes temperament — how much heat the person brings into a room. From the Moon, it describes the emotional weather of the marriage. From Venus, it describes the marriage itself, because Venus is the significator of the spouse.

This matters because a chart that shows the dosha from only one reference is a mild reading. What the classical texts mean by a manglik chart is one where Mars sits in a manglik house from all three. Most people told they are manglik have one hit, not three.

The five recognised cancellations

  • Mars in its own sign — Aries or Scorpio — neutralises most of the dosha.
  • Mars exalted in Capricorn cancels it almost entirely.
  • Mars in Cancer or Leo is treated as an exemption in several traditions.
  • Jupiter aspecting Mars is regarded as a strong mitigating factor.
  • Mars in the 7th in a sign it rules or is exalted in.

Any one of these reduces the weight considerably. Two together generally take a moderate reading down to a mild one. A chart is not read as a checklist — the cancellations are part of the same calculation, not an appeal against it.

Age changes the reading

The tradition holds that the dosha loses most of its force after about the age of 28. The reasoning given is that Mars matures at 28, and much of what the dosha describes — impatience, heat, the tendency to force a situation — is what maturity moderates anyway. This is why an arranged match at 24 and the same match at 32 are not read the same way.

Two manglik charts cancel each other

This is the one rule almost everybody has heard, and it is genuine. Where both charts carry the dosha, it is considered cancelled. The reading was never about a defect in one person; it was about a mismatch of temperature between two.

What the dosha describes is friction inside a close partnership. It is not a verdict against marriage, and it has never been one in the classical literature.
